WG105 (RecCom WG15) The Use of Alternative Materials in Marine Structure Construction (2009) introduces a myriad of alternative materials available for waterfront construction in lieu of the more traditional materials (concrete, steel and timber).

 

WG98 (RecCom WG16) Protecting Water Quality in Marinas (2008) discusses potential adverse environmental impacts associated with marinas and recreational boating and methods for improving flushing capabilities and thereby the water quality in marina basins.

2010 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award Recipient: Bahia Mar Yachting Center

The Recreational Navigation Commission is excited to announce that the Bahia Mar Yachting Center has won the 2010 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award. Located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Bahia Mar Yachting Center is a state-of-the-art, dual function facility serving as both a public yacht center that offers world class facilities to some of the world’s most luxurious yachts and a boat show venue – home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

 

 

 

 

RecCom at Seatrade Middle East Money & Ships

The RecCom Chair and Secretary, Dr. Ciralli and Dr. Maccarini, were kindly invited by Mr. Chris Hayman, Seatrade Chairman, to attend the Seatrade Middle East Money & Ships conference in Dubai and to participate to the Gala Presentation Dinner for the 2009 Seatrade Middle East & Indian Subcontinent annual regional awards.  The general themes of the conference were financial challenges and investment opportunities, financing the industry, and market opportunities with specific focus on the marina and superyacht markets. RecCom’s participation in this event started a conversation on the possibility for promotion of the PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award through Seatrade.

 

RecCom promotes PIANC in the Middle East

Concurrent with the 2009 Seatrade event in Dubai, RecCom leadership, Dr. Ciralli and Dr. Maccarini, met with Governments and other navigation-related Authorities representing Dubai (UAE) and Bahrain.  The purpose of the meetings was to discuss the development of commercial and recreational navigation infrastructure in these countries and the agencies respective roles in this development.  Presentations regarding PIANC activities and the agency’s potential role and participation were received by Dr. Louay Mohammad, General Manager of Marine Works, Nakheel Northern Projects in Nakheel Offices in Palm Deira, Dubai, UAE; H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin-Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water of UAE and Dr. Saad Al Numairy, Environmental Advisor at the Federal Environment Agency; H.E. Nayef Omer Al-Kalali, Undersecretary of Ministry of Works of Bahrain; and Mr. Hassan Ali AlMajed, Director General of General Organisation of Sea Ports Bahrain.  The meetings also included technical visits to Palm Deira construction site, the biggest artificial island designed in the world, and the new Khalifa Bin Salman Port.

 

RecCom meets with Platinum Yacht Management

In the midst of meetings with Government officials, Captain Tony Crabbe, Marine Superintendent of Platinum Yacht Management and Captain Mike Meyer, Fleet Manager of Platinum Yacht Management extended an invitation to visit the “Dubai” (the biggest Motoryacht in the world) and the “Dubai Magic” Sailing Megayacht and provided invaluable insight on megayacht facility management and operations.

 

RecCom at Coastal Maritime Mediterranean Conference in Tunisia

PIANC RecCom Chair, Mr. Elio Ciralli, was invited to chair a session of the 1st Coastal and Maritime Mediterranean Conference held in Hammamet, Tunisia 02-04 December 2009.  During the session, Mr. Ciralli lectured on the importance of forums for waterborne infrastructures knowledge and introduced PIANC and his activities with favorable audience response.  While at the conference, Mr. Ciralli also met with individuals to discuss the advantages of becoming a PIANC Qualifying Member. Conference participants enjoyed a very interesting technical visit to Gammarth Marina, located approximately 20 kilometers from Tunis. This new marina village, currently under construction, will include over 400 berths, 250 apartments, and 100 villas.
