These guidelines were prepared as a PIANC CoCom initiative by Working Group 123. The WG 123 Terms of Reference were directed at establishing guideline objectives and methods that identify best practices for shoreline stabilisation, in particular related to Countries in Transition (CiT).
rnrnThe Working Group primarily focused on the various coastal erosion problems that CiT have previously faced and may face in the future. This included possible solutions to coastal erosion problems, as illustrated by examples from real cases.
rnrnCountries in Transition are in the present context defined as countries having little or no experience with coastal management. This is often due to inadequate organisation and facilities. A CiT is not the same as a developing country, however, developing countries often belong to the CiT category. In respect to shoreline stabilisation, ?so-called? developed countries can also belong to the CiT category. The technical conflicts between coastal development and coastal erosion are independent of the categorisation of a country. However, in CiT the problems related to mitigation of the erosion problems are usually worse due to the lack of coastal management capabilities, legislation and administration.
rnrnThis report describes coastal processes and identifies typical coastal erosion problems; identifies best practices in coastal investigations and proposes practical decision methodology for shoreline stabilisation methods.rn
