Early in 1981 the Permanent Technical Committee I (PrC D of PIANC established ,a working group (WG 2) to study the problem of environmental impact related to the disposal of dredged material on land.

The working group met on several occasions and prepared preliminary drafts, but due to various reasons the study was terminated in 1985. In the meantime a PTC II working group had prepared a report concerning the disposal of dredged material at sea. This report was closely allied to the subject matter of the 1981 working group except that the location of the disposal was different.

In 1986 PTC I set up a new working group (WG 7) in order to reconsider the subject matter of the 1981 group, take over the available drafting, consider the subsequent relevant PIANC reports and to report on the subject Economic and Regulatory Aspects of the Management of Dredged Material Deposits in Inland Waterways””.

The new working group (WG 7) was constituted as noted below and help was also obtained by coopting or obtaining advice from members of the earlier WG 2. After discussion it was decided to prepare a report entitled “”Management of Dredged Material from Inland Waterways”” as a more appropriate title in view of current developments.”
