The RECCOM Recreational Navigation Commission of PIANC identified as a result of research undertaken by various working groups and individuals that there is a considerable amount of work being undertaken on a national basis to standardise the connection of services between boats, marinas and moorings etc. As a consequence the Commission felt it appropriate to undertake an informal review of current national standards with the work being undertaken directly by Commission members.

This document brings together the relevant standards from Europe, the United States and other countries. It identifies relevant international standards which it believes can be adopted and also lists relevant national standards where there are any. It also identifies those national standards that have no common basis and which are incapable of standardisation at the present time (eg. telephone connections).

It is not the intention of the author of this document, Mr. I.A. White of British Waterways, to set down a particular precedent for international standards, but merely to provide information from various worldwide sources and pass comment where appropriate upon the relevant standards.

The Commission and its author have undertaken to review the document regularly and suggestions for alterations on new standards would be willingly received by the author for future review.
