This report has been prepared by PIANC PTC I Working Group 12 to extend the work carried out by Working Group 4 on flexible armoured revetments incorporating geotextiles, to provide information about the use of Reinforced Vegetative Bank Protections on inland waterways.

The report is divided into sections dealing with Design, Construction Techniques, Inspection and Maintenance. The data was collected by a group of active members using their own experiences, published literature and contributions from experts to the committee. The report contains a comprehensive bibliography of the references used in preparing the final text.

In the section on the Design of reinforced vegetated revetment systems, the aspects which need to be considered when selecting the appropriate system for the various parts of the waterway, the different soil types, detailing and sizing the components are presented.

The Construction Techniques section gives details of the particular points which need to be included in project specifications and which need to be observed by contractors and supervisors on site when vegetated reinforced revetments are being installed.

Finally, the section on Inspection and Maintenance sets out ways in which the installed revetment systems should be regularly inspected to ensure that the full potential of the systems is realised.
