The international Group set up to prepare the report on the supervision and control of long lateral embankments followed the plan below :
In the first chapter they define the works to be taken into consideration, describe them and attempt to establish a classification in relation to the monitoring frequency and the means of control. The first chapter also includes an exhaustive list of different cases of possible failures.
In the second chapter the Working Group lists the existing equipment, methods and means for understanding the survey and control of embankments, and some recent means and methods used on embankments responding to the concerns of the responsible persons, after adjustments, if needed.
In its third chapter the report deals with the processing of data and measurements given by the equipement.
The fourth chapter gives a comparison of the costs of monitoring with traditional means on the embankments of the Rhone and the Po rivers, and of the recent means and methods described in the second chapter.
In its conclusion, the Working Group proposes a table giving the means and methods which can be used to solve a problem taking into account different parameters, such as the speed of intervention, delay of interpretation, cost, results, etc.
